I learned this while sitting in a well-appointed living room at her New York City home, with Nina Simone playing softly in the background. I must tell you, Madonna’s house smells amazing—something delicious, maybe roasted chicken, was cooking in a kitchen elsewhere in the manse, and there was a gentle fragrance in the air, jasmine, perhaps. While I waited for Madonna, her day-to-day manager, her publicist, and I chatted while reclining on gorgeous cream-colored furniture set upon the largest rug I'd ever seen, on top of immaculate black wood floors. On the wall behind me was a black-and-white photograph of a woman perched on the edge of a mussed bed, scantily clad, sucking on a gun, it's Helmut Newton’s Girl with Gun photograph. Of course.

No matter how much passion and imagination we put into designing and manufacturing the clothes at Syren, there’s an even greater thrill for us: Seeing how other people use our clothing to bring their own fantasies and visions to life once they’re out in the world.

We got one of those thrills earlier this year when Icelandic pop artist Björk released her ninth studio album, Vulnicura. The cover art features a magnificent shot of Björk in one of our black latex catsuits wearing a headpiece by Japanese designer Maiko Takeda who has a history of creating such pieces. The image was a collaboration between Björk and the photographic duo Inez and Vinooodh, who have worked with Björk for over 16 years on various projects. Inez explained their process and intention in an interview about the Museum of Modern Art’s 20-year retrospective on the imagery that’s made the singer’s career so memorable and groundbreaking:

Björk sent a beautiful video of a spider molting out of its own skin and becoming translucent, and then filling up with color again. For her, that was really the basis of the imagery around this album, this transformation and soft, waxy, yellow-pink coloring—and again, the idea of having emotions circling around her. She said she wanted to have a wound on her body, on her heart area, in an abstract way. From there, we worked with our stylist Mel Ottenberg on the character, and that’s when he found this black latex suit and the headpiece by a Japanese designer [Maiko Takeda], which she’d already worn once on stage. We constructed her persona with her on set—imagine you’re Mata Hari, a seductress, but you’re wounded, and there is an incredibly alluring softness around you.

Inez’s words are an exceptional description not only of the picture itself, but of what’s so appealing about latex itself. That sense of transformation is really a huge part of why latex captures the imagination and the passions of so many; its smooth, shiny textures can project the impression of strength, even invulnerability, while still preserving that “incredibly alluring softness,” as Inez puts it. We love this cover because it brings out so much of what we love about the latex clothes we make and what they inspire in people.

{ Full article in Rolling Stone } For Princess of China, Rihanna’s dramatic duet with Coldplay, video director Adria Petty and her co-conspirator Alan Bibby dreamed up a video concept that radiated danger, dark desire and intrigue. In wake of the clip’s Video Music Award nomination for Best Direction – a first for both directors – Thread Count spoke to the creative team about their art direction and styling of the video.

“Rihanna has this edge right now," Petty explained to Rolling Stone. “To put her in a situation where there's no edge seems like a mistake."

Princess of China separates itself from other videos by Rihanna and Coldplay in its physical and costuming feats, its eerily bright palette and its antihero sensibilities. Petty and Bibby owe its unusual treatment to the odd characteristics of the song itself. “We thought it was a weird song, in terms of time signature and structure, so I thought the format of a typical music video wouldn’t fit it,” Petty said. “But we thought that a kung-fu movie trailer would.” She and Bibby decided to create a series of striking vignettes loosely tied to an assassins-in-love-and-in-peril concept. They mixed together “action and kung fu" traits in a playful manner in which they could “get away with anything.” It is by no means a purist reflection of any Asian culture or tradition but rather, perhaps, their surface aesthetics reimagined through a Hollywood lens.

Young shared that Bey also apologized that she hadn’t been photographed in her Erica M. pieces because she mainly wears them “at home in front of her husband!” Ooh la la!

With that said, Young hopes that women will wear her collection with both confidence and sass. “She is a working lady who likes to have something a little sexy on underneath to reveal at the end of a long day. She’s strong and walks with a swing in her step,” Young told Style.com.
