Madonna’s Spring Awakening

{ Full article in Harper’s Bazaar } Madonna has no patience for bad wine. I learned this while sitting in a well-appointed living room at her New York City home, with Nina Simone playing softly in the background. I must tell you, Madonna’s house smells amazing—something delicious, maybe roasted chicken, was cooking in a kitchen elsewhere in the manse, and there was a gentle fragrance in the air, jasmine, perhaps. While I waited for Madonna, her day-to-day manager, her publicist, and I chatted while reclining on gorgeous cream-colored furniture set upon the largest rug I'd ever seen, on top of immaculate black wood floors. On the wall behind me was a black-and-white photograph of a woman perched on the edge of a mussed bed, scantily clad, sucking on a gun, it's Helmut Newton’s Girl with Gun photograph. Of course.

“I believe in freedom of expression, I don't believe in censorship. I believe in equal rights for all people. And I believe women should own their sexuality and sexual expression. I don't believe there's a certain age where you can't say and feel and be who you want to be.”

Bjork Wears Syren Catsuit on her Latest Album Cover

{ Original article on Syren Couture }
No matter how much passion and imagination we put into designing and manufacturing the clothes at Syren, there’s an even greater thrill for us: Seeing how other people use our clothing to bring their own fantasies and visions to life once they’re out in the world.

We got one of those thrills earlier this year when Icelandic pop artist Björk released her ninth studio album, Vulnicura. The cover art features a magnificent shot of Björk in one of our black latex catsuits wearing a headpiece by Japanese designer Maiko Takeda who has a history of creating such pieces. The image was a collaboration between Björk and the photographic duo Inez and Vinooodh, who have worked with Björk for over 16 years on various projects. Inez explained their process and intention in an interview about the Museum of Modern Art’s 20-year retrospective on the imagery that’s made the singer’s career so memorable and groundbreaking:

Björk sent a beautiful video of a spider molting out of its own skin and becoming translucent, and then filling up with color again. For her, that was really the basis of the imagery around this album, this transformation and soft, waxy, yellow-pink coloring—and again, the idea of having emotions circling around her. She said she wanted to have a wound on her body, on her heart area, in an abstract way. From there, we worked with our stylist Mel Ottenberg on the character, and that’s when he found this black latex suit and the headpiece by a Japanese designer [Maiko Takeda], which she’d already worn once on stage. We constructed her persona with her on set—imagine you’re Mata Hari, a seductress, but you’re wounded, and there is an incredibly alluring softness around you.

Inez’s words are an exceptional description not only of the picture itself, but of what’s so appealing about latex itself. That sense of transformation is really a huge part of why latex captures the imagination and the passions of so many; its smooth, shiny textures can project the impression of strength, even invulnerability, while still preserving that “incredibly alluring softness,” as Inez puts it. We love this cover because it brings out so much of what we love about the latex clothes we make and what they inspire in people.

Inside the Style of Rihanna and Coldplay’s ‘Princess of China’ Video

{ Full article in Rolling Stone } For Princess of China, Rihanna’s dramatic duet with Coldplay, video director Adria Petty and her co-conspirator Alan Bibby dreamed up a video concept that radiated danger, dark desire and intrigue. In wake of the clip’s Video Music Award nomination for Best Direction – a first for both directors – Thread Count spoke to the creative team about their art direction and styling of the video.

“Rihanna has this edge right now," Petty explained to Rolling Stone. “To put her in a situation where there's no edge seems like a mistake."

Princess of China separates itself from other videos by Rihanna and Coldplay in its physical and costuming feats, its eerily bright palette and its antihero sensibilities. Petty and Bibby owe its unusual treatment to the odd characteristics of the song itself. “We thought it was a weird song, in terms of time signature and structure, so I thought the format of a typical music video wouldn’t fit it,” Petty said. “But we thought that a kung-fu movie trailer would.” She and Bibby decided to create a series of striking vignettes loosely tied to an assassins-in-love-and-in-peril concept. They mixed together “action and kung fu" traits in a playful manner in which they could “get away with anything.” It is by no means a purist reflection of any Asian culture or tradition but rather, perhaps, their surface aesthetics reimagined through a Hollywood lens.

Naturally, high octane visuals demand equally impressive clothes, and Martin and Rihanna’s ensembles for Princess of China pair high fashion and high performance.

Syren’s Latex Police Cap is an Arresting Look for Femme Fatale Britney Spears

{ Original article in PR Newswire } Britney performs new single "Big Fat Bass" on MTV and Good Morning America in her custom couture rubber hat.

Pop goddess Britney Spears was a commanding presence in a gleaming black rubber officer’s cap from Syren Latex, as she took the stage this past week for her first public appearances since 2009. The singer did a three-song set off her brand-new album, Femme Fatale, at both a surprise Vegas show at Rain nightclub at the Palms Casino, and at a Good Morning America taping in San Francisco. Spears, who changed costumes for each number, paired Syren’s Muir Cap – a strict-yet-sexy latex police hat – with a lacy black leotard and fishnets. It was an arresting look for the debut of her latest single, Big Fat Bass, produced by Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am.

Fergie

Our Top 10 Music Videos of 2017

{ Original Article in Wear Latex } Another year, another raft of music videos featuring latex outfits. There were the usual suspects but also many complete newcomers to latex fashion and imagery. In a few cases, latex was an artistic representation of futuristic fashion or empowerment and submission; in other cases, it was not a meta-representation of ‘fashion’ but simply fashion in itself. And there is always, of course, room for latex as simple, unpretentious sexy fun.

Outfits were sourced from couture latex designers spanning the globe, from Vex Clothing, Syren and Dawnamatrix in the US, to Kim West, Atsuko Kudo and Maddrubb in Europe, and Atelier Harlem in Australia.

Fergie wears one of our favourite garments, justifiably popular among a long line of performers. So much so, that we even wrote a whole post dedicated to the Syren Garbo Blouse.

Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani, and the Ubiquitous Syren Latex Garbo Blouse

{ Original Article in Wear Latex }

Just a few days after writing about Jhené Aiko appearing in her Maniac video wearing Syren’s Garbo blouse, I find out Gwen Stefani filmed a promotion for Ex Eyewear wearing not one but two variants of the same top, surely confirming this as one of the more popular latex designs out there.

And small wonder: combining figure hugging and loose, flowing latex in one garment, the Garbo blouse shows off all of the wonderful properties of the material together. Not just its smooth flawless surface, how it clings to and reveals the form of the wearer underneath, reflecting and glistening under light; but also its weight, how it falls and folds, and the unique rustle as it does so. Irresistible!

Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood Shows Off Syren Latex’s Designs

{ Original Article in Syren Couture }

In the three days since Taylor Swift’s new video Bad Blood hit the Internet, it’s been viewed almost 30,000,000 times. That’s only counting the official version, not the various mash-ups, annotated versions, parodies, and unofficial uploads that are already filling up YouTube.

The appeal goes way beyond the usual show-business hype. Take a look at it below, and you’ll understand. It takes its cues from the best of the superhero movies that have come out in the last decade or so: the action is fast-moving and elegant, the sets are beautiful, and the costumes are sexy as hell. We have to not-so-modestly admit to being proud of our part in helping with that last bit. Watch that first fight scene, and you’re watching the handiwork of Syren Latex’s designers in action. Literally.

That first scene features Swift in the persona of “Catastrophe” beating up bad guys while wearing our Newmar Basque latex dress. A word of caution: no matter how much pride we have in our craftwork, we wouldn’t expect any of our clothes to survive a ten-story fall out of an office building. Or the person wearing them, for that matter. Even we have our limits.

Beyoncé

10 Reasons Why We’re Obsessed With Beyoncé’s Favorite Hosiery Line

{ Original Article in Huffington Post }

Designer Erica Young describes Erica M., her ultra sexy line of hosiery and bodysuits, as “focused on creating an emotional response.” And indeed it does.

One look at Young’s Italian-made, intricately designed, burlesque-ready collection and you see why celebs like Rihanna, Madonna and supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio are covering their curves in the creations. And speaking of curves, Beyoncé is one of Young’s biggest fans and has requested several custom designs, including one-of-a-kind sets of her signature tights in nude.

The Brooklyn-based designer told Style.com that she was “starstruck” when the “Drunk In Love” singer called to express her admiration for the line and place an order. Young shared that Bey also apologized that she hadn’t been photographed in her Erica M. pieces because she mainly wears them “at home in front of her husband!” Ooh la la!

With that said, Young hopes that women will wear her collection with both confidence and sass. “She is a working lady who likes to have something a little sexy on underneath to reveal at the end of a long day. She’s strong and walks with a swing in her step,” Young told Style.com.
